With Harness
Lifejackets with deck safety harnesses feature stainless steel fittings, including a ‘D’ ring for securing a safety line. They are recommended for sailors who have to spend long periods on deck. When the harness is attached to the boat via a safety line the chances of being lost overboard is lessened.

Without Harness
This option is often preferred by those who do not require attachment to their vessel, or where being attached is more dangerous than floating free, such as with motorboats, speedboats and ribs. These lifejackets are slightly lighter in weight and do not have metal fittings or a safety line attachment point.

Manual
Manual lifejackets will only inflate when you pull the toggle. Use this type of lifejacket in situations where you need to avoid unwanted inflation. Aviation use is a typical example, where inflation should only be activated when out of a ditched plane. Some sailors prefer a manual lifejacket but the disorienting effects of cold shock should not be underestimated.

Automatic
Automatic lifejackets have a water sensitive cartridge which triggers the inflation when entering the water. (They also have manual toggle activation as a backup) Auotmatic lifejackets are preferable in most cases as they will inflate if unconcious or suffering from thermal shock
