The combination of binoculars, integrated illuminated compass and built in height/distance scale makes this instrument a unique aid to navigation.

Visual navigation capabilities markedly increase by the extension of the visual range for bearings, allowing several accurate bearings to be taken. By means of the scale visible in the field of view, distance can be determined if the height or size of an object are known (or can be estimated fairly accurately).

Conversely, the height of an object can be determined if its distance is known. Of course, this typically nautical instrument is gas-filled with dry nitrogen to safe guard against internal moisture and is absolutely waterproof. Also, it offers a high brightness, which can be vitally important to the skipper when visibility is poor or under low light conditions.
