CHOOSING a child life jacket:- Children’s lifejackets may rely on FOAM, AIR & FOAM, or AIR ONLY to provide buoyancy. Normally, foam lifejackets will provide 100N of buoyancy and are suitable for inshore use. Air only and air/foam lifejackets meet the requirements of a 150N lifejacket and are suitable for offshore use.

Air only life jackets tend to be smaller, and less bulky to wear, but this type of lifejacket does not provide any buoyancy when it is not inflated. These jackets will inflate by means of a gas cylinder, and may be activated automatically if the wearer enters the water or be activated manually, by pulling on a toggle, or be inflated orally. A re-arming kit will be required each time the jacket is activated, and annual servicing is recommended. Crewsaver's CSR 150N & Crewfit 150N are suitable for children typically between 6-12 years old

Air/foam life jackets meet the requirements of 100N by using inherent buoyancy. with an additional 50N provided wirh oral inflation. to meet the requirements of 150N lifejacket - Crewsaver Seababy, Seatoddler & Seachild offer 150N of buoyancy.

Foam life jackets These provide 100N of buoyancy and are suitable for non swimmers in inshore waters. Some lifejackets are fitted with a harness attachment that would would enable you to connect the lifejacket to a safety line. Crewsaver Supersafe and Baltic 1256 offer this option. For non harness lifejackets the Crewsaver Spiral and Baltic 1240/1251 are excellent lifejackets. For babies the Baltic Bambi is extremely popular, and the Crewsaver Crib provides 150N of buoyancy.

All lifejackets are intended to support the child on their back with their face clear of the water.
Children’s lifejackets are supplied with a whistle to attract attention, and crotch straps as standard that must be worn at all times to prevent the jacket slipping off in the water or during rescue.

Buoyancy Aids are not classified as lifejackets and only recommended for competent swimmers. They are not designed to turn you over with the face clear of the water. They are ideal for watersports and dinghy sailing and there are a number of Junior versions available.
